A random except from Wikipedia, via a New Scientist article about robotic fins:
"The cities of San Francisco, New York, and Washington have utilized bluegills for monitoring their water supply from nonbiological toxicants such as pesticides, mercury, cyanide, heavy metals, fuel spills and phosphates. Fish cough by flexing their gills to expel unwelcome particles, like grains of sand, from their breathing passages. Sensitive instruments listen for unusual amounts of coughing. The American Army has given this device the commercial name "1090 Intelligent Aquatic BioMonitoring System'."
"Hey, this thing is cool, let's patent it."
"K, what do we call it?"
"I dunno. How about the Fish Cougher 1000?"
"Nah... 1000 is so overrated."
"Fish Cougher 1090!"
"Genius..."
*cough*

Cute furry thing of the day =)
Today's cute furry thing is the harbor seal. It's like a big furry slug with spots! Various types of harbor seal ("common seal" in Europe) are found along virtually all coasts in the northern hemisphere. They eat all sorts of fish and ocean critters and are fat and cute. They tend to stay close to shore and haul out in large groups, like by the mouth of the Russian River, where Steve likes to play with dead birds. Eww.
Catfish anyone?
My task (for the next three weeks supposedly, although I think I'll be done in a few days and I might go insane if I'm not) is to go through electricity tariffs for about five zillion utilities to see if the tariff format matches the structure of our current tariff database / calculator thingy. Thrilling, right? I just found this a couple minutes ago and had to try really hard not to start laughing loud enough to draw attention to myself. Stupid open workspace.
I guess catfish farms need electricity too, but it was just so random... hehe

Cute metal thing fo the day (or month, maybe ever)
Uhhh...try taking this thing's eggs away.
I dare you.
(I would have embedded the vid...but I'm using a fresh fedora install on my work comp. Which means flash isn't properly set up...and the photo gallery doesn't want to let me jack images. They're so smart...I'll formalize this post when I get home)

Cute furry thing of the day =)
Today's cute furry thing is the zebra-leg tarantula. You get a generic picture because I don't have any digital pictures of mine (Cameron is at least that fat, Mom overfeeds her). This little fuzzball can get to about the size of your hand, live for 20 or so years (mine's probably 14, had her about 12 years and she was big when I got her), eats whatever ground dwelling bugs it can get its fangs on, and likes to burrow. And mine used to like to watch TV, but I think she's gone a bit feral since her running away and hiding in the bathroom cabinet incident. And they can lay eggs after not having humped anything for over a year. Tricky little buggers.

Pyramids anyone?
Yo! This is the most serious post I have made thus far. There has been something that I have needed to do ever since I was a little boy and I saw pictures of the great Aztec pyramids. I need to see them with my own eyes, and if possible, Id like to walk along them. Now I know that every single year that passes another Pyramid in Mexico is closed to public because they want to prevent early decay caused by tourism. I completely agree with their sentiment so I figure I just have to get my ass over to Mexico quick, fast, and in a hurry so that I can still go check out whats left to be seen. Anything not public runs along the lines of Indiana Jones, with the possibility of being shot by local government/pirates included! I think I may just be cool on discovering the lost sacred relics of one of the most significant cultures that has ever graced the Americas but it would be nice to go check out the public ones, if only from the bottom. Whose coming with me? I know that Lorenzo and I talked about going to Mexico city (a good location to start if one wants to catch the major pyramids) back in high school. I said wed go when we graduated...well thats already half done, but Id say in many ways I also have graduated, so I think the time has come to collect on that promise. As for everyone else....yall like traveling, hiking, and looking at cool ass ancient shit, why not tag along?! Now I know everyone wants to go to Japan, and I know that may be first priority on most peoples list. I can say this....dude I want to go to Japan! I just have to do this first. Its my culture, my passion (ancient civilizations), my history, and most importantly, my fucking backyard. Its so close, Id feel silly to spend a lot more money to go to India, Tibet, and Egypt (all of these places I do plan on going to for sure in the next 8 years) when I could spend a lot less, do a lot less traveling, and see something equally as astounding. Granted Mexico City is not exactly on par of Cairo in terms of architecture, and air quality (lungs hurting just in anticipation), the ancient pyramids that claim that region of Mexico/Belize are, for me, equally significant finds for modern man, and more importantly, just fucking cool! I was thinking about planning this trip for the summer of 2009. I am dead serious. I will be saving, planning, and coordinating in terms of plain tickets, hotel rooms, bus fair, and pyramid tours and I will keep everyone else up to date with all the info I accumulate. I just wanted to plant the seed in everyones mind so that in about 14 months well all be boarding planes to go on an amazing adventure, as opposed to enrolling in some cheap ass summer class for creative popsicle house building or meditating with monkeys, wait on second thought that last one sounds pretty cool, but not quite as cool as going to see pyramids. Well see what happens but I know for sure that I will be there.
p.s. if you go with me to Mexico, Ill go with you to Japan. thats not a bribe. just a promise. haha.
Mordor is go!
Hi guys. Just wanted to let you know that after some confusion with the national park service sending out emails saying that we both had permits reserved and had been rejected, I've just confirmed that we do in fact have backpacking permits for Aug 9-12. So everybody better start climbing up hills lugging 50 pounds of crap on their backs to prepare. And we need Platypus Brigade hats, and a little flag so we can claim Half Dome in the name of the Brigade.
Garfield - Garfield
Some Garfield comics with Garfield removed. At first I was a little puzzled...then I started laughing pretty hard.

Who's f@cking who?
Sarah Silverman's "I'm F@cking Matt Damon"
Jimmy Kimmel's "I'm F@cking Ben Affleck"
If you guys don't know, Jimmy Kimmel is notorious for always claiming he's run out of time on his show to bring Matt Damon out. Just some funny stuff...And also, Sarah and Jimmy are an item...I didn't really know that till a few months ago. Sigh...
