Shaving and skin

This is a post for the men. What razors do you all use? Lately I have been getting really bad facial acne, mostly ingrown hairs. I have yet to determine if its for physical abuse of my face (not using the correct facial cleansers/ineffective razors), or if its an outward manifestation of how I feel about my self (like absolute shit) or both. Ive been trying to drink more water, using sensitive shaving creams, and I even use some deep cleansing facial scrub by St. Ives, but nothing works! Im thinking about fucking proactive at this point. Its all the dating and meeting girls at CSUN and what not. I know I shouldnt be shallow, but all of us wants to look good when making a first impression, if I knew these women better I honestly wouldnt care that I look so horrible as of late, but considering that these women never knew my face before this semester, its a shame for myself to be misrepresented in this way, I normally have fair skin! WTF! Any advice? Im currently using a Mach 3 Turbo razor with Gillete sensitive skin shaving cream. I have no real reason to blame the razor, Ive been using the brand for years and I normally dont get so many ingrown hairs, not sure what it is, and Im willing to try anything at this point. Any advice is much appreciated. If women somehow know more about this than men please feel free to insert advice if applicable, just thought the guys might have more fammiliarity with shaving face/ingrown hair issues. Wish me luck.

When I still shaved properly that is exactly what I used. I got pretty sensitive skin and that was the best I had found. Do you change the blade after 2-3 times of use? 3 uses or more can make the blade super janky and not as sharp. I use a beard trimmer to maintain my facial hair and noticed a huge difference when I got a new one this past xmas. It cuts more evenly and doesn't cause much irritation, I think the blades on the old one were shot. So my first suggestion is whatever you're using make sure the blades are sharp.

Fuck proactiv! I tried that shit when I was in high school and it was pretty much worthless. Drink plenty of water and try to wash your face at least twice a day (morning and before bed).

Stress is not going to help. I get my worst zits when I'm stressing about something. Yeah... uhm you should quit school and work and become a sailor... LOL! I got nothing for this as you gotta do what you gotta do. Good luck man!

I'd say drinking a shitload of water is probably going to be the most helpful. Be careful with cleansers. The old formula of Clearasil always made my skin about a million times worse, so you may want to change it up if you've been using something for a while and noticed no difference. Japan has some really amazing facial products, one of them being a Clearasil type thing called "Perfect Whip." I imagine it's sold here, but I'm not entirely sure. There are also weird little oil absorbing papers (pretty sure there are American brands that make versions of these now) that will suck the extra oil off your skin without you having to traumatize your face with another scrubbing. Lastly, have you been using any sort of moisturizer or lotion? It may seem counter intuitive, but having your skin all dried out from cleansers and stuff actually seems to make it retaliate with extra oil. Wataru's mom sends him care packages sometimes and one of them had this gooey clear gel stuff that he was calling "lotion" (it's totally not) that is the single best skin product I've ever seen. It's not the least bit oily, but moisturizers really well, which seems to keep me from getting as oily in the first place. Sadly, I just ran out. I need to go root around at the Asian mall and see if I can find something similar. I've got a feeling that it's just lube, but yeah... even if it's the same chemicals, I'd feel a little weird putting lube on my face. Um, anyway, best of luck, and if I do track down any of these miracle products I can send you a care package. About the whole beardiness thing, I don't have much to offer by way of suggestions, but I'm sure sharp blades help. At least I know that makes a big difference when shaving off body hair.

well, I do normally change out the blade after 3 uses, perhaps I should become more conservative, and change out the blade with every two uses, sort of wasteful, but my face is important. Thanks for the anti-proactive advice, it makes me think twice about going that route.

someone else told me to try lotion on my face! it does sound counterproductive I must admit, but as for as dry skin goes my skin can get dry with the use of the St. Ives stuff, I may change the brand, I know for sure Clearisel fucks up my skin bad so that wont work, tried it in high school and it did a number on me, but the St. Ives seemed to be fine, until recently, maybe its all in vain until I relax and stop stressing, Ive not been stressing concsiously, just too busy to even think about stressing, but Im starting to believe that underneath Ive been seriously tripping on a few things, and perhaps my body is showing me that, I dunno. Thanks for the start.

Water is always the answer man... drink it, wash with it, but most importantly put it on your face before you shave.
About 3 years ago I switched from a shaver to a razor. Did what you did. Got a nice disposable and all that and got the same results. And it hurt... not going to lie, I really didn't like shaving, felt like each hair was getting ripped more than cut.
The answer for me was old school. Oddly enough just around the time of Sweeney Todd I started using a double edged safety razor. Not quiet a straight edge but similar in theory. You get a much better blade that is sharper stronger and more resistant to nicks and cuts. A single blade lasts about a month of daily uses. In addition though you use a brush and a completely different shaving soap.

Honestly that's where I started my journey. The soap the mentioned (Taylor of Old Bond Street Lavender) is pretty damn nice... That alone will change your opinion of shaving.

I've never been known for my shaving regularness, but after I switched to a wet shave with a razor and cream... I actually shaved every week day (give or take a few) for about a year... and look forward to it after I get a job again.
