Econmy woes hit close to home

So remember when you were young and you thought that you were invincible. Well, I'm sure plenty of us figure with the economy tanking that we wont be affected. I know I did. It turns out I was wrong. There's a chance that come February I wont have a job and from now to then I have to take a significant pay cut (everyone at my work is) =P

Why am I sharing this with you guys? While my boss was talking to the company he started asking how many of us have friends that have been affected by the economy woes...sure, one guy knows a guy and so does another, but none of us had really heard anything significant. He said feel free to share because people talking about these things help make change.

So there you go. First I thought to myself, "things are bad if Washington Mutual gets hit..." then I thought "man, if my job gets hit..."

There's a chance we'll be able to stay open if we can find an investor, but unfortunately with the economic climate the way it is, people are not exactly lining up.

Sorry I've been out of the loop. Internet was down, had to work while in LA. Thanksgiving madness, party madness...sigh. The party was a blast though, I'm just sad no one from the cup could be there, but that's how it goes eh =)

Anyways, I have faith, I know things will work out fine and well. I've already chatted with my family circle, Evelyn, my mom and Belen. Evelyn is still moving up, she'll just be chief accountant for casa de flores because I've always been bad with my money.

So hey what do you know! You all now officially know someone who has been hit by the recession, which ironically enough was just announced yesterday when I got the news.

Oh yeah, and sorry Ron, looks like this will be my last month at the YMCA for now...so let's make it good eh?

Wow. that. sux. Okay when I said the blog would hopefully pick up this week this wasn't what I had in mind! Here I was hoping it was just me having trouble finding work and that you guys were all solid. It's shocking, it seems so distant when a bank takes over another bank, now the ramifications are getting closer and closer.

Well when does your ymca expire? We should make the most of it. I should be down to go later on so gimme a call.

We could do lunch at our house sometime. Catch up, have sandwiches, chips and not spend extra cash.

Man, I'm really sorry to hear that. I hope you guys find an investor, your work has always sounded interesting even if I only understand about a quarter of what you're doing. If not, you're a smart and qualified guy, so I'm sure you will find something. At the moment, the lab seems pretty stable funding-wise (I think we just hired two people, totally weird considering the 1.2 or whatever million jobs lost recently). I'll let you know if I hear about anything opening up in one of the more sciency groups.

I am also really bummed to hear that your work is suffering due to the economy. I feel extra bad for having gloated in the past that the economy has not affected my work. However, we were told recently that there may be a cut back in benefits, Im not sure to what extent, if we may have to start paying a small amount out of our checks, but up until its been full benefits. In addition, I know that with CSUN I may receive less grant money in upcoming semesters due to lack of funding. So it does effect me, just nothing big at this time. Im sorry that its already hitting you, lets hope things change, with the new year. If this line of work doesnt last for you Im sure you will be able to place yourself in an equally stimulating and socially relevant line of work, its only a matter of time. Dream the dream, Live the dream.

You might want to poke around on http://jobs.lbl.gov/. Unfortunately the two data monkey class 1 jobs in my department have been filled (although I think the add is still up...), but you might want to check the computer and physics groups. I'm not really sure what computery things you can do, or I'd try to check it out for you.
