What I learned today (yesterday...): How to identify a northern harrier

"Hey, Dad, it's your white butt bird!"

Yesterday I went for a hike with my parents in the nature preserve where my dad volunteers and this is what I learned...

The northern harrier is:
- about the size and shape of a redtail hawk
- travels via a funny flap-flap glide movement about 10 feet off the ground
- has a big white stripe on it's butt right above its tail
Yay!

Other wildlife sightings of the day include:
6 rough skined newts
2 California newts
1 banana slug
1 cheetah
no, I'm not kidding

now that I think about it, is that banana slug even real? did you just use one of your toys?

the cheetah wasn't quite in the preserve, it was at the crazy Africa park down the road. it still counts though..
